Time has witnessed a sharp surge in the number of prisoners who have served their sentence and willing to have a fresh start. Despite their desire to be a part of the social life, there are ideas that these former criminals don’t deserve to have our concerns and attentions for their criminal background. These people return to their home from the nation incarceration without jobs, stable homes, or hope for the future. That is the reason why Reentry programs for ex-offenders are created. Building a village for the former criminals: People live here all have a guilty past and the same desire to integrate into the normal life, for their future and their offspring’s one, too. They were a member of the underworld, prostitutes, murderers,… yet now wishing a happy ending for their life story. Local policies and authorities try their best to support them materially and spiritually, contributing their time as well as effort to bring the light back to these people’s lives.
Give strength to amendatory: The content of this program is to provide job opportunities to ex-offenders with the aim of helping them get out of poverty, have a stable income.
Providing free health care system, free vocational guidance seminar: Most of the individuals want to correct themselves and follow the right path have no money, no jobs. So, in order to assist them, the Government provides many free programs such as Health check-up, a seminar for career guidance, classes for living skills,… to somehow equip them with the basic knowledge needed when to apply to a job. There are also classes for eliminating illiteracy. The main reasons leading these individuals into the wrong path is their lack of knowledge. They don’t know how to behave right, they have no idea what the right thing is to choose. Teaching them how to read and write is one way to make the miracle happens.
Commend and reward to the good: This is a meaningful program for misguided young person allowed to have a reunion with their family on our national holidays. All of them have a firm job and being able to support themselves as well as their family. The Government also proclaims amnesty for those who have a right attitude during their serving period which means that they are released even though they haven’t accomplished their duration. Some of these individuals successfully fall in line with the society, get a job and even find a marriage partner.
Nevertheless, the fact is that there are people who still too hard on these former prisoners. They try to pick to pieces shortcomings in the prisoners’ lives. These individuals have paid their price and are looking forward to contributing their best to their families, their neighborhoods,… as a hard-working, tax-paying, loyal citizens. They have rights to be treated fairly in fields of employments, education, health care, housing and all other aspects of daily life.
Instead of discriminating them, we need to do what we can to help for they are doing everything with all their minds to gain our acknowledgment. They have paid their debt to society and are ready to move on, heading to a promising future, there is no need to put down their wishes. The whole society should do nothing but paying more attention to these reentry programs, make them more effective, efficient and accessible.
The fact is that when people with criminal records succeed, then we all succeed. The society benefits when formerly incarcerated people achieve their lives of independence, leading a healthy, responsible, crime-free lives. With Reentry programs for ex-offenders, we should try our best to lend them our hands, give them a welcome warm hug and do a better job at recognizing their special challenges. Those programs for ex-offenders are a core first step in this endeavor.
